My Personal Finance Journey: From Early Earnings to Big Mistakes & Lessons Learned

🌱 My Personal Finance Journey: From Early Earnings to Big Mistakes & Lessons Learned 🌱 I began earning at a young age, while I was still in college, giving tuitions to earn a little extra on the side. By my first year of college, I had secured my first official job. While my first paycheck wasn’t much, it felt like a huge milestone! 💼 Growing up, I saw my parents diligently save money, which left a strong impression on me. I knew saving was important, but I wasn’t educated on how to invest wisely. One of my biggest mistakes early on was trusting a Ponzi scheme. At the time, I had no idea what that was. For anyone who might be unfamiliar, a Ponzi scheme is an investment scam that pays returns to older investors using the funds from newer investors. It promises quick, high returns with very little risk. Unfortunately, I fell for it and ended up losing all the money I had saved. 💸 This rude awakening left me scared and cautious about where to invest my money. For many years after that, I stuck to what felt "safe"—things like insurance policies and fixed deposits. But the reality is, while those options are safe, they often don’t provide the kind of returns you need to grow wealth over time. I was playing it too safe, out of fear. It wasn’t until 2008 that I decided to take control of my finances and create an actual financial plan. That’s when I made my first planned investments in mutual funds, aligning my investments with my future goals. I realized I needed a strategy to secure my future. Looking back, I wasted almost 10-15 crucial years playing it too safe and not investing wisely. That remains one of my biggest regrets in my personal finance journey. I wish I had started smarter, sooner. 💡 But mistakes are the best teachers, right? If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that being financially smart isn’t just about earning money—it’s about understanding how to grow, protect, and plan for the future. And the sooner you start, the better. 📌 Do you have any personal finance regrets or valuable lessons? I’d love to hear your stories!
